Day review of the Main Round.

W19 EHF EURO 2019, 11-21 July, Győr, Hungary
Main round, 1st round

Group I

FRANCE – DENMARK 22-23 (11-11)

Eric Baradat, head coach:‘It was a tough game. Our opponents are very great in this tournament. Although we lost this match, we played well. For me the quality of the game is much more important. We did a lot of great moves today. I am a bit disappointed because of the final result. Now I am concentrating on the following game. If the Russian win this one, we are going to play against Netherland, and if we beat them we can qualify ourselves to the Semifinal.’

Maelys Kouaya:‘It was a difficult game. Our defense worked well but we did small mistakes and later we payed the price for them. I am still proud of this team and hope that we will fight the same way tomorrow against Netherlands.’

Flemming Larsen, head coach:‘It was a hard and physical match. We played in an attacking style, so we scored a lot of goals, but our defense was not working well. The saves that our goalkeeper showcased were amazing and also very important, especially the last one. It was a very stressful game today. We are excited about tomorrow, I hope we will play the way we did today.’

Sylvie Gamys:‘This game was one of the most exciting matches in my life so far. We started very well, but later we almost lost the game. At the moment I am very happy but we do not really have time to celebrate. We need to stay focused. I hope tomorrow we will win again, I do not care how we will make it, what I know is that we deserve it.’

RUSSIA – NETHERLANDS 28-31 (15-15)

Liubov Sidoricheva, head coach:‘Both teams are very very good, we expected this match to be as hard as it was. This result is completely acceptable, but we are a bit disappointed. This is handball: once you are the winner, next time you lose the game. We have to focus on the next match now as this tournament is not over yet.

Elena Mikhaylichenko:’I am utterly disappointed. We knew that they were good and we fought until the end, but today it was not enough. We built up a four goal lead but then we missed a lot of chances while our defense did not work well. We have to win tomorrow to reach the Semi Final.’

Monique Tijsterman, head coach:‘In the first half we were a little bit too nervous, we made many technical mistakes. Fortunately, we were still close to Russia. For the second half we improved both in defense and offense, and we could surprise Russia. Our fastbreak goals happened to be decisive in the end, so I think, these were the key to this victory.

Nikita Van Der Vliet:’We are beyond happy right now, I cannot tell how important this victory is. I think our defense and supporters were the key today. It was amazing to hear the chants from our families. After last year’s seventh place at the world championship we wanted to fight for a medal this year and now we are in the Semi Finals so we are really satisfied and proud.’

Group II

HUNGARY – NORWAY 28-24 ( 16-12)

Vladimir Golovin, head coach: ‘We had hard times in the beginning. Our goalkeeper could not save and we could not score many goals. After changing our goalkeeper, our game improved a lot, especially in offense. We had good performances individually, but our team effort was the one that made the difference between the two teams.’

Dóra Szabó:‘When I got the chance to play I wanted to prove to myself that I am better than I was in the previous matches. I think it went well. In the first half we could come back from a four goal deficit, which shows how strong we are in the key situations. In the second period we took over control and we could slow down the pace a little bit. We are happy that we won against Norway but now we have to focus on tomorrow’s match against Romania.’

Knut Ove Joa, head coach:‘We have good players in our team, but Hungary has better players when it comes to substitution. After the first changes in our opponent’s team we started making technical fouls and their goalkeeper saved in key moments. They made counterattacks from these saves, and we got five goals from these situations which were decisive in the end.’

Marie Kristine Rokkones Hansen:‘We started well but after a while we missed some really important chances which made us anxious. We let them come back and took over control on the game. It was our fault and we need to improve in both offense and defense because tomorrow we will play a really important match where we should not commit that much mistakes.’

SPAIN– ROMANIA 24-29 (12-14)

Imanol Alvarez Arruti, head coach:‘We missed a lot of shots today, I do not know how but we missed all our chances and Romania’s goalkeeper saved almost everything. This is the reason why we lost today, if you cannot score goals, you cannot win. Tomorrow we will try to beat the Norwegian team, we will see what will happen.’

Nerea Gil Munoz:‘We played so bad today, it was like two days ago against Hungary, but there we at least knew that the Hungarians are better than us. Today we had many chances to win this game. We had only one big problem in our game, we were just simply not able to score. We need to show a better performance tomorrow because the Norway has a better team than Romania.’

Dragos Dobrescu, head coach:‘We played well today. We strictly wanted to succeed with the plan and I really enjoyed the game I saw. I am proud of the girls because they do better and better since the beginning of this tournament, which means that our chances are better when it comes to the very end of this European championships.’

Bianca Chetraru:’I don’t play for myself, I play for the team. The win is more important for us, than my individual performance. Being in the top 8 is more significant than the praise for a well-played game.I hope we will be able to win tomorrow against Hungary as well, so we can reach the Semi Finals.’

Intermediate round,1st round
Group III

SLOVENIA – CROATIA 22-33 ( 11-20 )

Bojan Voglar, head coach:‘We did not play well today. We committed every mistake we could, and we were not focused at all. Although we tried to keep up with the opponent, we were not able to defend and attack well.’

Tea Treven:‘Today we played a though match where we were not able to be as aggressive as the Croatian team. We fought but after a while it was impossible to win so we just tried not to lag behind. They were stronger today, that is it.’

Ivan Jerkovic, head coach:‘We had a lot of ups and downs in this match. In the first half we played better than in the second, because we gave a chance to some of our players who have not played so far or just have played less in this tournament, but tomorrow we must win against Slovakia if we want to play for 9-12 places.’

Elena Popovic:‘I am glad because it was our first win in this tournament. We were in a very hard group but now it all sounds better for us. Maybe tomorrow we will have a harder match than today, but we will definitely go for a win against Slovakia as well.’

SLOVAKIA – GERMANY 18-39 (5-19)

Zdena Rajnohovo, head coach:‘They were simply better physically. All their players were faster and stronger than us. And in this age group it does count a lot. This is all we can do, but it is a good experience for the girls and maybe tomorrow’s match will be an easier one.’

Jagodic Melani:‘There was a big difference between us and Germany in this match and not just in terms of skills. We know they are a better team, but their players were bigger than us and we couldn’t stop them’

Marielle Bohm, head coach:‘Today's goal was to beat the opponent, which we fortunately achieved. Otherwise, the first ten minutes were catastrophic from our point of view but then everything came to an order.'

Dana Bleckmann:‘I think the physical difference between the two teams was there during the whole game. We struggled at the beginning because they were faster than us, but our defense became better and in the end we could win thanks to that. It was really good that we could all play today and the others also performed quite well so I did not have to play in the second half. I can rest until the next game. First, we have to prepare for our opponent I cannot tell if it is going to be any easier, we will see.’

Group IV

Suzana Lazovic, head coach:‘Mentally, it was a really hard game. I am proud that my team could stand up from the matches we lost and could be this strong today. Our defense works quite well during this tournament, but in attack we have some problems. To reach the world championships, we have to work on this, as well.’

Anastasija Babovic:‘Today we played with a lot of mistakes but the most important is that we could win. I think our defense was really good, I had an easy job behind them. We should not let our game to be like a roller coaster, today we had periods when we did not do anything well. We need to save today’s pace for tomorrow against Portugal.’

Niklas Harris, head coach:‘Those periods when we play well are getting longer, but we still have some minutes when the opponent is a lot better than us. There are some good things we can take with us from this match, but we wanted to win and we did not succeed. We have to continue to work like this and analyse these matches to be better and better.’

Jackie Moreno:‘I am so disappointed, we were so close, we almost made it. I think we could fix the previous problems, our defense finally worked but in front of the other goal we missed a lot of chances. We really want a win so I hope we can be even better against Austria.’

AUSTRIA – PORTUGAL 28 – 24 (15-5)

Helfried Müller, head coach:‘I think we played a perfect first half, we got only five goals from our opponent. Our performance really impressed me as Portugal showed confidence during this tournament, so we prepared for a harder fight. In the end, however, we had problems, but we knew we have to win this game to maintain our chances to achieve the best place we can in the Intermediate Round.’

Klara Schlegel:’I am glad to get the MVP award but the most important is our victory and it was due to our fantastic teamwork. We did a really great job with our defense and after the first half we felt more confident, so we could focus on our game. The second half was more tight but we could manage to keep the distance between the two teams.’

Aldina Silva, head coach:‘The beginning of the game was a disaster but we improved a lot during the match. The mistakes we made in the first half determined the result of the game. We were able to resolve most of the problems for the second half, and if we would have played for five more minutes, we could have won this match.’

Joana Resende:’We were very anxious at the start of this match and we could not relax. The second half was promising, we scored twenty and we were better in defense as well. Tomorrow we will have to arrive to the match because it will be an important one. If we will perform like we did in the second period we will win against Montenegro.’
